Department of Information Technology

Philosophy

1. The philosophy underlying the works and functions of an Information Technology degree is to prepare graduates equipped with conceptual, analytical, and technical decision-making skills that will help them play fundamental and creative roles of Information Technologists in society.
2. To produce a flow of graduate capable of contributing to the development of Nigeria, within the general objectives of Information Technology in Nigeria, based on their specialized training and within the framework of programme guidelines of the National University Commission for the promotion and development of the Department.
3. To produce highly creative and innovative graduates who are competent enough to be self-employed in the field of Information Technology and its allied disciplines.

Aims and Objectives

1. To create in students the awareness of and enthusiasm for Information Technology and its capabilities.
2. To involve the students in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying.
3. To provide a broad and balanced foundation in the knowledge of Information Technology and practical skills.
4. To develop in students through an education in Information Technology a range of transferable applicable skills of Information Technology to all aspects of human endeavors.
5. To generate in students an appreciation of the importance of Information Technology in an industrial, economic, technological, and social context.
6. To provide students with knowledge and skills base for further studies in Information Technology or multidisciplinary studies involving computer science.

Admission Requirements

Candidates can be admitted into Information Technology programmes in one of the following three ways:

1. The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)
2. Direct Entry
3. Inter-University Transfer

 

 

UTME

The minimum academic requirement is credit level passes in five subjects at O’Level in nationally recognised examinations including English Language, Mathematics, and three other Science subjects which are relevant to the intended programme at not more than two sittings. In addition, an acceptable pass in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) with a relevant subject combination is also required for admission into 100 Level.

 

Direct Entry

Candidates seeking admission into a programme in Science through Direct Entry must have passes at GCE ‘A’ Level/IJMB or its equivalent in a minimum of two Science subjects relevant to the intended programme to be considered for admission into 200 Level. This is in addition to fulfilling the requirement of a minimum of credit level passes in five relevant subjects at ‘O’ Level as indicated above.

 

Inter-University Transfer

Students can transfer into 200-level courses provided they have the relevant qualifications. Universities are to certify that students meet the minimum requirements for the Inter-university transfer.
