The university is established for the purpose of training students for the nation’s manpower needs at the middle and upper levels; encouraging them to acquire proper values for survival and national development and enhancing their total development to enable them play appropriate leadership roles.
Guidance and Counselling has a crucial role to play in this institution. It is needed to assist in addressing various problems, which students are likely to face at this level of education.
These include problem associated with late adolescence and early adulthood, adjustment to life in tertiary institutions and preparation for life outside the school system. It is through the provision of adequate professional assistance to address these problems that the chances of reaching the goals are set out above may be considerably increased.
In this institution, guidance counselling is expected to:
Develop in students skills for better self-understanding.
Equip students with skills for self-improvement both at school and in later life.
Assist students in adjusting to the life and culture of their tertiary institution.
Provide information on family life education.
Highlight dangers inherent in various social vices (e.g. drug abuse, secret cults, arson, vandalism, etc).
Help students develop better interpersonal skills.
Equip students with skills for achieving fulfilling academic life.
Equip students with knowledge, attitude and skills for developing adequate social skills
Assist students develop effective time-management skills.
Provide remediation approaches to students in event of academic challenges.
Provide information to students on world of works after the university experience.

- Establishing available support services at the tertiary institutions.
- Providing information on time management.
- Providing information on study habits.
- Providing information on the course unit system.
- Explaining criteria for change of course or change of institution.
- Engaging in career talks and career role playing.
- Discussing problems of occupational choice.
- Explaining how to make informed choice.
- Addressing trends in employment market.
- Engaging in job placement for graduating and other students.
- Emphasizing relevance of area of expertise to national development.
- Explaining rules and regulations guiding student conduct.
- Introducing clubs and societies.
- Discouraging students from examination malpractices.
- Addressing relationship problems.
- Addressing issues of secret cults, drug abuse prevention and other social vices.
- Preventing disruptive behaviour.
- Providing information on stress management.
- Reduce examination phobia and test anxiety.
- Engaging in family life counselling.
- Discussing techniques for improved self-image.

- Discuss various types of steps to be taken for effective time-management.
- Hold talks on various study techniques.
- Explain and practice behaviour modification techniques.

- Participate in institution’s committees’ activities.
- Provide guidance and career matters.
- Organise talks on various social issues engaging resource persons from public and private organizations (e.g Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency – NDLEA, Planned Parenthood Education of Nigeria – PPFN, etc.)
