Wednesday, May 2, 2018 was an exciting day of football as the MICU football team hosted the Federal University of Petroleum Resources – FUPRE football team at the MICU football field in Agbarha-otor.
It was a thrilling match as students and staff from both universities came out en masse to support their team.
The Match kicked off at 4:50pm (WAT) and MCIU football team took the lead in the first quarter of the first half. The FUPRE team came all out to get the equalizing goal but fell to the attacking force of the MCIU team. In the 35th minute, FUPRE conceded another goal and the MCIU community were incredibly jubilant. There was a hard tackle from a FUPRE player that led to the minor injury sustained by MCIU playmaker ‘Ngolo Kante’.
The referee blew the whistle for half time and the coaches of both teams had pep talks with their players. A DJ dropped some beats that had the spectators dancing during the halftime break.
The second half kicked off and the FUPRE team came out strong and playing into the net of the MCIU football team, scoring their first goal of the match.
The atmosphere in the stadium was quite tensed for the home fans as the match became keenly contested. MCIU goalkeeper, Ekene, was quite instrumental to the team performance because the FUPRE team kept firing from all cylinders but this goalkeeper stood his ground, refusing to let anything get past him.
Hearing the sound of the final whistle sent the home fans into a frenzy! MCIU won the match with 2 scores against FUPRE’s 1
The staff and students of MCIU flooded the pitch to celebrate the hard fought victory.
